How to Install Slatwall Panels – Step-by-Step Guide
Installing Slatwall panels is one of the most efficient ways to transform your retail space into a functional and flexible merchandising area. Whether you’re outfitting a boutique, convenience store, or specialty shop, proper installation ensures durability, safety, and long-term performance.
At Barr Display, we make it easy for you to get started. Follow our simple step-by-step guide below to install your Slatwall panels like a pro!
Step 1: Prepare the Surface
Slatwall panels can be mounted on finished or unfinished walls. If you're installing on concrete block walls, we recommend using furring strips for a smooth and secure attachment.
Pro Tip: Allow panels to acclimate to room temperature before installation.
Step 2: Find and Mark Studs
Use a stud finder to locate the studs in your wall. The recommended spacing is 16 inches on center. Mark these locations clearly—this is where your screws will go for maximum support.
Step 3: Cut Panels (If Needed)
If panels need trimming to fit your space:
Use a circular saw (cut face-down) or a table saw (cut face-up).
For panels with aluminum inserts, use a carbide-tipped blade for cleaner cuts.
Step 4: Mount the Panels
Use 1½” screws when fastening to studs directly, or 2” screws if installing over drywall.
Only insert screws through the grooves—not the slats themselves.
Space screws every other groove for a secure hold, and avoid overtightening.
Important: Do not allow screw heads to stick out inside the grooves, as this may interfere with Slatwall accessories.
Optional: Use Adhesive for Extra Strength
For added security, apply construction adhesive to the back of each panel before mounting. This improves long-term stability, especially in high-traffic retail environments.
Installation Complete
With your panels securely installed, you’re ready to start merchandising. Add shelves, hooks, bins, and baskets to fit your changing inventory. Slatwall systems are designed to grow and adapt with your store—just like your business.
